Test Your Vowel Power is part of a PBS show called “Do You Speak American?”. I obviously don’t (speak American) because all my answers/guesses are wrong. I swear that the fifth word was “Troy”. Take the test and let me know how you did, especially if you are American.

As you know, I’m a born-and-raised midwesterner, and I got none of them right. That lady has some bizarre inflections.
I’m Canadian, and I only got ‘desk’ right. I couldn’t even understand the extended hints.
I got two right and I’ve liven in New York City all my life. I got one of the two right only because of the hint.
I’m American, Californian to be precise, and only got 2 right. The clips of “busses” and “socks” didn’t sound anything like what I’m used to. I don’t know if that’s due to bad sound quality of the clips or just an odd accent on the speaker’s part.
I am an American and I only got 2 right. The sounds were pretty pathetic.
I’m American as well. I only got one right (desk). Seriously though, maybe I just live in the wrong part of the country, but I’ve never heard anyone say “block” and “sock” like they did on there. “Desk” “grade” and “busses” I can imagine though.
I got only block and desk right. The other ones were so skewed. Socks sounded like slacks.
I got zero and I’m a New Zealander – I guess that it’s to be expected!
I got 3 out of 5 correct (not American). And I thought the last word was “groin”. ๐
California born and raised, and only got desk right. Socks sounded a lot like sax. They didn’t even have an American say those phrases. It sounded like an English or an Irish person.
I got 3 out of 5 right (I’m American), but I had to listen to them all at least twice. Yikes!
I got one right. And it did sounds like Troy. ๐
